Gateway Laptop Question?
I'm a high school student going into college in 3 months. Since piratically every college student whose taking computer engineering is required to have a laptop I decided to go to future shop and find one for myself. In there I found a descent computer, a gateway NV5909H. But after coming back from the store with it my family told me that gateway uses cheap parts and my laptop will fall apart in under 2 years. So I'm just wondering if what they are saying is true because I don't want it to blow up in my face after 2 weeks of use.

- I've had a Gateway P-6831fx for two years now and have not had a single problem with it. The truth is that EVERY computer manufacturer uses cheap parts, and installs gimicky software to lower the cost of the computer. If you want to empower your purchasing decision, head to http://www.newegg.com and browse their laptops. The best feature with newegg.com is the customer reviews. Not only will you save money shopping at Newegg, you'll know what you're buying.
- I don't agree with that - I've had my Gateway since I first went to college in '07.. I'm typing from it right now. It's held up for me well thus far :) All computer brands have some that just turn out to be lemons, but most of the time they're usually fine. Nine times out of ten I don't bother, but considering the laptop will be used a lot (since you're leaving for school), I'd suggest getting extra warranty (accidental coverage NEVER hurts) just in case something goes wrong though.
- Gateway's are fine. As stated almost every pc maker uses cheap parts. However, Panasonic's Toughbook line of Laptops is far and away above the competition with it's bulletproof design. I know as I used one of these while stationed in Iraq. I would imagine one would be using one of these for a decade or more.
- Im using a GATEWAY RIGHT NOW to type this answer and when i started Jr college 3 years ago this was my first laptop and the parts all work fine and are not falling apart the only part thats messing up on me right now is my LCD screens hinge but thats my fault for always slamming the lid so hard when i closed it lol
