What is the "normal" temperature for a Gateway laptop?

I have a Gateway laptop that's about 3 years old. It has Windows Vista, ATI graphics, and an Intel Celeron processor. It has always run warm to the touch near the fan, but a couple of days ago the entire computer shut down on me and it was quite hot. I've downloaded Speed fan to watch the temperatures, but I don't know what a "normal" running temperature is for a laptop or when I should shut it down to refrain from burning something inside up. Could anyone please help me?
