Gateway M Series Laptop won't boot past the Gateway Icon?

I have a Gateway M Series Laptop (unsure of exact model) and just the other day it failed to shut down properly, so i held the power button and it cut off. When i power it back on, the Gateway Icon comes on with the F-2 or F-10 options at the bottom, and it just sits at the Microsoft screen with the scrolling yellow bars. What could the problem possibly be?

1. try booting in safe mode then manually start your anti virus once that is done start your anti spy ware ,when the is complete restart your computer should be ok
2. You probably have a virus. I had the same problem with my desktop and I had to install a restore disk. This can be ordered from: https://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=emachine It is a Gateway sight and the cost of the disk was 20 dollars. This will erase everything on your computer and will restore it back to factory configuration. I got a virus about 4 months ago and this is all that I could do. It was about 100 dollars cheaper than taking it to a computer repair shop.
