Gateway 320GB Hard Drive compatible with Dell Inspiron?

I have a Gateway M series laptop. It is no longer working correctly, so I am looking for another. If I were to take the hard drive & install it on a Dell inspiron would it work? I lost all my stuff on the hard drive, so I need a laptop thats cheap to install it on. please help me ok, so what is a sata hdd?
