Install dell os reinstall cd on any computer?

The dell os reinstall disks seem to be very common, i have a few of them, but they will only install on dell computers. What part of the computer does the cd check to be dell? Is it the bios? Would just switching your bios with a dell one work, or is it something else?

1. I reinstalled XP using a dell install disc, but I refuse to touch Dell computers. there is no Dell in my PC, so I really have no idea why it wouldn't work for you.
