laptop wont stay connected to my wireless router?

i have a compaq presario CQ60 notebook PC, Windows vista home basic, AMD sempron(tm) SI-42 2.10Ghz processor, 3gb memory, 32bit operating system, it has a wifi adapter installed into it, its a atheros AR5007 802.11b/g wifi adapter(the driver is up to date) but the problem im faceing is it will not stay connected to my router, i will connect but 10 seconds later it will disconnect then i will connect again and the same thing, every time this happens i have to reset my network adapter under the diagnose and repair option of my internet icon on the bottom right hand part of my screen. once i restart it, it works fine for 10-20 seconds but then it will disconnect, its not the distance from the router because if i take it and put it right beside the router it does the same thing, i want it to work properly wireless, this has been a problem for about 2 months since i got it for christmas. i will post more about what router i have if nessesary. i have a netgear range max wireless N-gigabit router WNR3500

  1. Make sure you only have one dhcp server on your network. If you have a broadband modem and a wireless router both may be trying to give out ip addresses. Disable the dhcp server on the router and see if that fixes the problem. You could also try assigning the computer a static ip address.
  2. What is the signal strength that the wireless adapter is receiving? What kind of router are you using? How old is this router? Has it been updated? You are running THE top of the line Wi/fi adapter brand and the adapters a,b,g,n should all work together. Here is an article that you may find interesting in maybe upgrading your router to a newer model. Make sure you keep and save your ISP settings as you will need to reenter it when you setup a new wireless router. http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless80211/a/aa80211standard.htm
  3. It sounds like the router is on it's last leg. To check to see if the router is the problem, take and get an ether net cable, connect it to the router and to the laptop and see if you can keep a connection for more than 2 minutes, if you can, then good, if not then the router is your problem and you need to get another one, if the connection is sound but still have a problem with wireless connection, take the laptop to another area ans see if you can connect to a different hot point for wireless and keep the connection for more than 2 minutes, if it drops then it is the laptop, if it stays then it's the router and it needs to be replaced.
  4. Maybe resetting the connection is the problem shut the router down and leave it for 2/3 mins while you remove the network link on your laptop I think it is corrupt so here goes this will take about 2/ 3 mins and is very easy to follow Try this 1.Shut the router/hub down and leave it off 2.On your Laptop go to the wireless icon(bottom right of your screen) 3.Right click and choose (Network and sharing Centre) 4.From this Choose manage wireless networks ) 5,Highlight your Network and in the bar above Choose remove 6.Ok this and exit back to desktop 7.Shut down your laptop 8.Switch on router let it load 2/3 mins 9.Switch on your laptop 10, Go back to the wireless icon this time when you right click Choose( connect to a network) 11. When your network appears add your key /password and hopefully you are now online and it should hopefully be fine If you are still having probs send a mesage I will try and help you further
