Gateway Parts

Computer Help....Soldering?!?

I've got a Gateway laptop that is a couple of years old...the DC jack inside the laptop is worn apparently (won't charge battery or start up w/ AC cord). I bought the replacement on Ebay for a measly $3...how much would it cost for soldering material to do the job myself? Or would it be cheaper ($100 estimate from two different terrorist PC nerds) to pay to get it repaired. I have computer experience...I was able to asses the problem...built/repaired computers before but soldering is new to me. Someone told me about Radio Shack...they solder parts for a fee/sell soldering parts?

  1. get a soldering gun. it shouldn't run up that much.
  2. Well soldering can be risky as a you could make the problem worse, and since you are new to soldering i would not reccomend you do it. Sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry, but paying $100 to get the DC jack soldered on is absolutely ridiculous. Better to have a friend who has experience do it for like $20. I have not heard of radio shack doing PC repair but it is worth a try. Hopefully it will be less that what the "terrorist PC nerds" are asking.
