Cheap Computer Parts to build my first PC?

I am thinking about building my own PC and was wondering where can I find good cheap parts. I already know of Newegg and Tigerdirect and it still seams expensive. So are there any better websites for building PCs? Also can you explain why everyone says building a gaming PC is cheaper? I kept doing the math based on Tigerdirect prices and it's much more expensive than buying a computer from BestBuy and upgrading. I mean after the Hard drive, OS, Memory, Case, Motherboard, Power Supply, processor, DVD drive, etc. How is it cheaper?
