Hp laptop was sent to HP for warranty repair- Is the Hard Drive safe?

I had a part fail on my HP notebook so I sent it to Hp for repair under warranty. I sent it through best buy and refused there offer to backup my hard drive for $160. I did not expect the Hard drive to be any issue so the Geek squad guy has made me very uneasy as I did not even think erasing my hard drive would even be thinkable because all HP has to do is replace the fan. Can someone please confirm with me weather my hard drive will be safe or not? I mean what business does HP have to erase a hard drive when the laptop was sent in to have a fan replaced only. Aside from the fan the system functions normally and the OS(Windows & works perfect) until the laptop overheats and shuts down.

  1. it maybe depending on what cause the problem..
  2. They're just trying to squeeze a few bucks out of you, they have no reason to touch the HDD to replace a faulty fan :)
  3. Your HD will probably be fine. This type of offer is done primarily to protect HP from liability in the event of unexpected data loss. I'd strongly suggest you back up your own data regularly. External HDs are quite inexpensive and an increasing number of sites offer free or cheap online storage. Got a CD/DVD burner? Get WinRar and burn some disks. There's no excuse. Well, perhaps there's one excuse, but it's not very good. I'm lazy.
