  1. whenever it's my choice i try to buy AMD processors pentium processors are expensive but when you are buying a computer just worry about the over all price, you will not be keeping any laptop for 6 years, trust me, with daily use the hinges start to wear out, not to mention the perils a portable computer is exposed to
  2. How about Dell Notebooks. Worth giving a look and may fit in your budget as well.
  3. Laptops are lasting longer these days. Companies that I have worked for, do have laptops and being unwilling to update them especially every time a new Operating System (OS) comes out. They had some over 5 years. I've got one that is Dell over 6.5 years old currently running XP Pro. I have another laptop running Win7 on it and an IMAC even a desktop computer. Without knowing what you want to use it for it does affect the answer a lot. I would suggest contacting the College ask them what applications they are using. Write down the names of them and look up the spec's for each of them. Doing this type of research will help you to cut back on buying a computer that could limit what you do. Some people feel that AMD is better for gaming than Intel and some say it is more stable. Try to get as much in your laptop as you can. Most feel that Desktops are easy to upgrade and majority of the time that is true. Much easier and faster to get into for upgrades than notebooks or laptops, then again depends on the model too. If you were not in a rush I would recommend saving up more money then buying http://www.alienwaire.com and they are owned by Dell. They have great gaming laptops and really good specs in all their models. They have new and used models you can click for either on that main page of theirs. If you are going to look at the screen long hours because of work, college, studies, and gaming. Then you might want to consider a larger screen such as 15.4 inch and to large adds a lot more weight.
