can I use parts from one laptop for another?

I have a gateway mt3422 and tonight I dropped it on the floor and the screen broke:( I have a question though. Can I use parts from a gateway laptop in a dell laptop like the hard drive? or any other parts?

1. The drivers and utilities for the two lap tops would be different. You could use the hard drive as long as both are SATA or EIDE but would need to reformat and install the correct operating system for the Dell using a set of recovery disc made for the Dell.
2. well if you have no experience in the field (sorry that may sound dumb) I would definitely do my(meaning you) research. Remember Google is your friend! I know there are external hard drive kits out there in where you just purchase the kit for a hard drive type and size. To answer the question I don't see why not, although some parts will be a major pain. As well as theres the fact that a laptop is a very complicate piece of technology such as screws being half screwed in to be a grounding(which was weird to me) so it can be a bit much for the run of the mill user.
