What internal hard drive fits a Gateway MT678 laptop?
My laptop is locking up after 2 minutes of being logged on and I was told that my hard drive is too small and I need to a new internal hard drive for my Gateway laptop model MT678 but I do not know what spec fit. What's SATA 2.5? I heard someone mention it in regards to laptop hard drives and see some on sale on online but do not know if it is right for my machine.

- I can find a Gateway MT6708, but not a MT678: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Oasis/2905909R/2905909Rsp2.shtml If the laptop is < 4 years old, it pretty much has to have a 2.5" wide SATA hard drive (SATA refers to the type of internal connector). Any laptop hard drive up to 500 GB would fit. Moving your old hard drive information to the new disk isn't a trivial matter, but it can be done without loss.
- Why not transfer some of your files to external devices then you will have your system back and you have not had to open it up or alter or re install the OS
- She means the Gateway Laptop model number MT6728. Does anyone know what hard drive fits that?
- Any 2.5" SATA drive should work as long as it is under 500gb in capacity. Here is an example of a good one. Not too expensive and quite step up in size. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136565
- Dear Inquirer, The best way to find out what you laptop supports as far as your hard drive, is the go to www.gateway.com and click on the support link. Then once you have, there is a place to enter your model number and type (laptop) into the search line and your computer should come up on the screen with a link to all the "specs" concerning your laptop. most of the time you will get an entire list of all the parts that made it up. click on the hard drive in the list and it usually brings up a photo of the part along with the "specs" of the part, and generally lists all compatable drives for your laptop. (meaning size of drive width/height/depth/speed/space amount on drive/and connection cable type to your laptop. such as SATA). Once you have all that wrote down, then you can look up how much they are at any electronic/computer store by doing another search by typing the type and space size of the hard drive and all the ones that fit those specs you entered will come up. For example; type "3GB hard drive, SATA" and see what they have. Try for example www.frys.com and do search. Hope this helps. Sata is the connection l shaped plug that allows faster data transfer speeds between you hard drive and your motherboard.
