how do i get my laptop to use alt codes?

i have a compaq presario cq56-115dx notebook. pretty cheap but for the most part it does what i need it to. however i cannot for the life of me get it to use alt codes or any variation thereof. there isn't a ten key on here so i went to do the fn + num lock thing but realized there isn't a num lock key on here either...

1. If you just want the symbols go to: Programs » Accessories » System Tools » Character Map.
2. If it doesn't support the NumLock key natively, I think it's time to use the Character Map application. Simply open Start > Run... then type "charmap" and press Enter.
