How to get into a locked gateway laptop?

My dad's father passed away and he had a new laptop, so my dad's mom gave him the computer however the computer had a password and none of us know the password that he would have used. Is there anyway we can sign on as a different user? He has a Gateway, with widows XP. The log-in kind of resembles a schools log on it only has the option to shut down and put the the password. Simply you can get rid from that situation by Reinstalling or to formatting the window. There may be another issues but I think it is the simplest way.
