How to get past a user password on a recently purchased Gateway Laptop...?

I have a Gateway M-Series Laptop. Model Number: W650A Just bought at a pawn shop today, the default user is the only user, ADMINISTRATOR. I need to know how to get past this so I may change the password. I know there is a way to do this, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. EDIT: Do not have the CD... Don't know the operating system, XP or Vista I would assume with the age... EDIT: WINDOWS 7

1. for xp ctrl + alt + del 3 time at welcome screen username admin / administrator password admin or blank

3. Tap F8 on boot up and go into safe mode, if the admin account there is unprotected, then you can delete the password, and you problem is solved , but I have seen safe mode protected if that is the case it is a reformat of the hard drive for the average user? By rights the pawn shop should have done this already, whenever I buy stuff from a pawn shop, especially electrical I make sure it is working before I leave the shop as they do give you a 3 month warranty?
4. don't know the OS ? that's strange, since you say you cant log in, as during the boot you would know what OS is was.
