Problem with acer aspire screen?

My acer notebook screen recently gave out suddenly. I can still see the screen albeit in a very dim way, so I do not think it is completely shot. But whenever I do something that affects the screen i.e opening and closing I hear a faint noise coming from the right speaker and then the dim screen comes up. I have it plugged into an external monitor currently which seems to be working at the time, although I am skeptical as to whether this can hold up. Little things have slowly been deteriorating on my computer (first my A/C cord was having problems them after one usb port broke the other no longer works). I have a three part question to ask: 1. Is there something I can do to it without having to spend on anything, as I am a tech savvy person, and assembling and disassembling is no problem. Maybe some settings I can mess with, anything really I'm willing to try. 2. If I do need to purchase something, what exactly do I need to buy, whether it be an inverter or something of the nature. 3. If I continue to use this external monitor, should I back up my files somehow, b/c I feel an impending complete failure of my computer coming as several things are wrong with it at this point.

  1. Until recently laptop screens were illuminated using very thin fluorescent tubes (usually 2, one at the top and one at the bottom). These are driven by an inverter which has most likely failed (a common fault). However they are not usually expensive and can be fairly easy to fit (depending on the model!).
