Will having a boxfan attached next to my open pc affect my computer parts?

My computer only has 2 fans. Since my parts tend to over heat, i have been deciding whether or not to attach a box fan next to my computer, instead of the computer slid panel. Will this affect my computer parts in any way? People say this will attract more dust ? I just used my fan to cool my pc down... And it blew out more dust then it came in.
