How do you restore a Gateway laptop with Windows 7 to factory settings?

I bought a Gateway Laptop with windows 7 on it from ebay. It has the previous owners stuff on it and I think it has a virus. How can I restore it to its factory settings? I dont have the password to login onto the laptop. Please help! I have tried pushing F10, Alt F10, and F11 at Startup but nothing happened It asks for the password for the User at the login screen

  1. what password is it asking for? is it a black or grey screen with only a bar for you to type in the password? or does windows load and it shows usernames that are password protected? kk...do you have the windows 7 installation discs? If you have a Windows 7 installation DVD (not a recovery DVD) you can boot the system with it...to boot to it, 1. restart the computer and keep pressing "F2" repeatedly. 2. use arrow keys to navigate to the "boot" option and select it 3. put "boot from cd/dvd" at the top of the list. 4. save changes and it will boot to the disc. 5. Select the default language, then choose "Repair your computer". 6. Then select "Command Prompt". 7. At the command prompt type the next step (8).... 8. net user administrator /active:yes 9. press enter Remove the installation disc and reboot the computer. you will see a new account "Administrator" has been enabled. log onto it and make the changes to the other accounts (delete the old ones and create new ones) through "start" > "control panel" > "user accounts"
  2. Try to keep hitting F9 or F8 there is a instruction which you going to choose.
  3. Here's the instructions for reformatting the hard drive in your Gateway laptop. Since you don't have the password to log into the computer, before you can apply the instructions, you'll have to log into the computer by using the "Safe Mode". This can usually be accomplished by hitting the F8 key at start up to get into safe mode. You should then be able to follow the steps in this link for the system recovery process. If this process doesn't seem to help, take the computer to a repair shop ( and proof of your eBay purchase ) and have them wipe the hard drive and re-install Windows 7. Be sure to make a copy of the operating system when it's free of viruses. Good luck! http://www.ehow.com/how_4865537_restore-computer-back-factory-settings.html
  4. If the poster had an installation disk there would be no need to ask the question???? 1. Reboot, and press F11 or the R key to start the recovery process (keep tapping the key from the start of boot up). 2. Select either "Full System Restore (Destructive ***This will erase all your unsaved data!***)" or "Full System Restore (With Backup)"*. 3. Click "Next", and then click "Yes" to confirm the recovery process. 4.Wait for the computer to restore itself. When it is done, click "Reboot" to reboot the computer. *Full System Restore With Backup preserves data in the My Documents folder, but requires 4 GB of disk space. © arou42
