Gateway laptops touchpad jumps randomly?

I have an old laptop, I believe it is an M1617 from Gateway. For some reason the touchpad scrolls up and down randomly and it gets very irritating when I am trying to do research on the internet. Does anyone know why my computer might be doing this?
