Numpad subscript* keys don't work (gateway laptop)?

I have a Gateway NV series laptop. It has a right side numpad with numbers and subscript? (i'm not sure what they are called) keys such as the home or end key underneath the numbers. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get them to work. The function key doesn't do anything to them. ive tried numlock and all that, can someone tell me how to get them to work properly? And yes the light comes on when i press the numlock key :)

  1. Numlock is the key that should shift the numeric keypad into or out of numeric mode. Numeric mode is where the numbers are produced when you press the key. The other mode is where the keys do the secondary actions beneath the numbers. (That's the ORIGINAL purpose of numlock from waaaay back on the first IBM PC with PC-DOS, by the way, before the separate arrow and positioning keys were inserted between the numeric keypad and the alphabetic.) I don't know why, however, it doesn't seem to be working for you. Does the NumLock or Num Lck indicator light come on? Hope that helps.
