Gateway Parts

Hey, i have a windows 98 and im looking to upgrade it a little using parts from my friends computer?

The two parts that im looking to upgrade first are the ram and the processor. My problem with the ram is that the ram card does not fit into the slot on my 98... and then for the processor, doing the hardware install should be easy enough, but once i turn on the computer will there be software problems or anything that i need to install? I want to be able to use this computer for world of warcraft, which at some point will require me to get a better graphics card i no.

  1. Switch to a Mac.
  2. If you change the processor there will be no software to change. It will just work.
  3. Firstly, your not upgrading your OS, your upgrading your computer. Secondly, I'm sorry to break it to ya man, but if the ram's not fitting into the motherboard, then it's not compatible. Your going to have to either buy a new motherboard entirely, or buy different ram sticks. I'd go for the motherboard, and start fresh. I'm currently building myself a gaming PC, will take some time to piece it together, but will be worth it when I'm done.
  4. Don't do anything until you know what you are talking about. A windows 98 is not a computer that you can upgrade by changing parts. Windows 98 is an outdated operating system (software). It does not have slots to fit ram cards into.
  5. ram slots aren't universal. be sure what you're getting is compatible with the memory slots of your motherboard or you'll be risking the motherboard as well. processor installing is not as easy as it looks. you need to make sure too that your motherboard supports this new processor or both may be damaged. for some cases, you may also need to reinstall your os to make everything run smooth.
  6. windows 98 is an operating system and a completely obsolete one. You need to find out the brand and model of your motherboard and what kind of memory it takes. If that ram card does not fit then it is the wrong kind of memory. Same goes for any other part, it has to be compatible for that board. If it is an old board for the Pentium 2 or equivalent I would just concentrate on getting a better machine altogether, that and upgrading to a better OS than win9x. You may not be able to play WoW until you have done all these things.
  7. I'll have to agree with the others. If you have files on your current computer that you do not want to lose, save them however possible, preferably by memory sticks. I currently have a 2003 Dell Dimension 8300 with MicroSoft Windows XP that has a slot for floppy disk (which I don't use anymore), CD, DVD, and back of the unit is the USB outlet for my memory sticks. Your computer should have a USB outlet. Get memory sticks to save what you need to, and get rid of your outdated material. Obviously, I don't know what your personal financial situation is right now, but even some of the slightly older model computers can handle what you need and shouldn't be too expensive for you. A side note, I've been hearing a lot of complaints about the new Windows Vista, so hold off upgrading that far until Microsoft works out all of Vista's bugs.
