what to do if i lost defective part that needs to be returned to HP?

my cdr/rw drive for my nc6000 notebook is dead. HP agreed to replace it, but asked me to return the defective part. i lost the defective part (yes yes i know it's stupid). what do i do? please help! thanks! also, are they going to bug me for the defective part? what would happen if i just... dont do anything?

1. Probably pay for the new one. Call HP and beg, they may be nice.
